First Samuel

As we begin our new sermon series on 1 & 2 Samuel, we take a look back through the books of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy, examining the journey of the Israelites out of bondage and into the wilderness.

4. 1 Samuel 1-3
“Birth of the Prophet”
Telling the account of Hannah’s desperate prayer for a child, Eli and his worthless sons, and young Samuel’s call from the Lord, Pastor Trevor explores the first three chapters of 1 Samuel.

5. 1 Samuel 4:1-7:2
“The Ark of God”
As the Israelites go out to battle against the Philistines, they must face the consequences of their mistreatment of the Ark of God. However the Philistines will also have to face the wrath of God as they capture the ark.

6. 1 Samuel 7
“The Come Back”
20 years after the Ark of God is returned to them, the Israelites are lamenting after the Lord. Why and will they return to God? Miracles abound in this amazing chapter from God’s word!

7. 1 Samuel 8
“The Demand”
At the close of chapter 7 we saw the Israelites devoted to God as their Lord on earth and in heaven. However, only a few short years later, their desire to be just like the surrounding nations would drive them to make a demand that would change everything: give us a king.

8. Whose Will?
How do we reconcile God’s sovereign will and our free will when both are scriptural? Pastor Trevor uses the word of God as his guide to walk through what this looks like, and how we as believers are called to live with this tension.

9. 1 Samuel 9 & 10
“Long Live The King!”
In these 2 chapters we are introduced to Israels first earthly king, Saul; the man who couldn’t find the donkeys and hid behind the baggage. But who is this man chosen by God really? Is he humble or afraid? Fearful for faithful?

10. 1 Samuel 11
“The Proving”
It is Saul’s first official military action as King, will he prove himself the man Israel needs?
Also, we celebrate the first Sunday of Advent by lighting the Hope candle!

11. 1 Samuel 12
“The Final Plea”
Samuel has a final plea for the people of Israel as they move into this new chapter of their lives, but will they heed him?
Also, we celebrate the second Sunday of Advent!

12. 1 Samuel 13
“Disobedience & Destruction”
In one moment of disobedience, the course of Saul’s entire life is changed forever, and his kingdom will never be the same.
We also celebrate the third Sunday of Advent.

13. 1 Samuel 14:1-23
“Faith & Foolishness (Part 1)”
While Saul waits with his 600 terrified troops, his son Jonathan makes a daring move against the Philistines.

14. 1 Samuel 14:24-52
“Faith & Foolishness (Part 2)”
As the Israelites pursue the Philistine army, King Saul makes the men swear a foolish oath that will lead to the sin of many and nearly cost him the life of his son, Jonathan.

15. 1 Samuel 15:1-19
“The Final Straw (Part 1)”
God has a very important task for Saul to carry out, but will he be obedient?
After the sermon, we also take a very close look at communion and what it means to examine ourselves before coming to the Lord’s table.

“The Final Straw (Part 2)”
How does Saul react when Samuel accuses him of disobeying God’s command? Is there genuine repentance or will Saul continue to lie and justify?

17. 1 Samuel 16: 1-13
“David Anointed”
In chapter 16, Samuel is sent to anoint the man that that Lord has chosen to be king, a man after His own heart, David.

“Emmanuel”
When the Lord sends an evil spirit to torment Saul, help is found in the most unlikely person.

19. 1 Samuel 17:1-37
“David & Goliath (Part 1)”
We all know the story of David and Goliath. But do we really? Is what we’ve always been told what’s actually in scripture? Chances are you’ll find that the biblical account is a little different from what you think.

20. 1 Samuel 17:38-57
“David & Goliath (Part 2)”
This showdown between David and Goliath really isn’t a showdown at all, this is a non starter. Goliath never even stood a chance. After all, as David says, “the battle is the Lord’s.”

21. 1 Samuel 18:1-16
“Pride, Fear & Faith (Part 1)”
The relationship is about to change drastically between King Saul and David. With David’s triumphant return as giant slayer, the people love him, Jonathan loves him as himself, but Saul now sees David as the rival that he is. To what lengths will Saul go to remove David from the equation?

“Pride, Fear and Faith (Part 2)”
After Saul’s first attempt to kill David was unsuccessful, the king begins to seek other means of ending David’s life. However, the Lord is with David, and Saul has no idea what he’s up against.

23. 1 Samuel 19:1-12 & Psalm 59
“Deliver Me (Part 1)”
Saul, tired of waiting, puts a hit out on David. However his son Jonathan gets him to see reason and the error of his ways. There is peace, but not for long.

24. 1 Samuel 19:13-17
“Deliver Me (Part 2)”
As David’s wife, Michal, helps him escape from Saul and his men, some concerning details come to light about what David has allowed into his home.

25. 1 Samuel 19:18-24
“Deliver Me (Part 3)”
As Saul chases after David, intent on killing him, he is intercepted by the Lord and Saul is reminded in a very real way, just how great the Lord is.
